Beds of Spikes; 1968-1969

Walter De Maria's fascination of working with metal really showed in this art installation. He felt metal possessed luminous, pure and limpid qualities. This later became inspiration for his most well known work "The Lightning Field".

Earth Room; New York 1977

In 1977 he took a normal everyday galley in New York and covered the ground with over 50 cubic meters of soil. Creating a connection between Earth and the built environment. A gallery in which the visual field can create a new appreciation of the ground that lies beneath us.
